If the cost of disposal is integrated into the product price and labeled clearly, the more environmentally friendly product that minimizes waste, uses sustainable materials, and reduce energy consumption will have the competitive edge.
This system promotes competition that values sustainability. Manufacturers would be incentivized to innovate in product design—moving away from cheap, disposable goods that carry high environmental costs and toward more durable, recyclable, and eco-friendly alternatives. Over time, the financial incentive to reduce disposal costs will drive more efficient, sustainable manufacturing processes, reducing pollution and conserving resources. Consumers would also benefit by choosing products with lower disposal costs, further contributing to reducing landfill waste, lowering carbon emissions, and ultimately fostering a circular economy.
By requiring manufacturers to label the disposal costs of their products Extended Producer Responsibility, we can create a transparent, competitive, and environmentally conscious marketplace. Such a change would empower consumers, encourage mindful consumption, and push manufacturers to prioritize sustainability in their designs.
